Terminal Server - 393 PDF issues

Postby briancmps on Tue Jan 05, 2010 11:29 pm

Hello,

We are running a small Globe installation in a terminal server environment. At some point, we seemed to have lost our ability to create document attachements in PDF format. I believe it might have been when we upgraded to 393 and suspect it has something to do with the NovaPDF print driver.

In order to use the Nova driver on a T/S, Globe had us install the server version but rename it to match the desktop version. This will seemingly generate a pdf attachment but then the system cannot read them.

Is anyone else running in T/S? Had a similar issue?

Thanks,

Hi Brian,

We are also running Globe in a terminal server environment. We never had any problems with the installation of the nova pdf driver (as far as I am aware of - I wasn't here when we initially installed Globe).

However, just recently we had some problem with the Nova PDF printer and a document was "stuck" and wouldn't print. From that point on, all of the PDFs created were 0KB files and could not be opened. We had to stop the print services on the Terminal server, and then restart them to clear out the Nova PDF printer queue. After that, everything worked fine.

I can try to see if we did anything special to make the Nova PDF driver work on the terminal server, but we have since setup a test terminal server and did not do anything of that sort that I can see in our documentation.

We experienced the same issue (printing 0kb PDF documents) when we upgraded to 393. We are not running Terminal services and the problem was isolated to a few workstations.

We took the following steps:
1. Ensure that novapdf printer is NOT set as default printer in globe.
2. Reinstall the PDF driver on each affected workstation.
3. In user Output settings, uncheck Print preview
4. Set up Event Manager (or background job) to check for 0kb documents so that users can be notified and redistill and IT is alerted to recurrance of the problem. It has not since we moved to 394.

If you're using a Terminal Server and want to print via Exact Globe's PDF printing, you will need a different driver. This driver is not part of the standard installation of Exact Globe and therefore needs to be installed separately by the user.

To install this driver, the user will need to be an administrator. The steps are as follows:

1. Uninstall any previously installed novaPDfdriver. This can be done with the Add/Remove Program under the Control Panel in Microsoft Windows.

2. Download and install the driver attached to this document.

3 Go to Start/Settings/Printer and Faxes. Rename the Nova Printer as novaPDFProv4.

Hi Liz,
We do have the Novapdf printer installed correctly for TS as per the document. When I reintalled the printer, attachments did start working again....however the same problem would creep back up a few weeks later.

The default printer is not set for Novapdf...can or should the "specific" printer be novapdf?

Why can we not use "Print Preview"?

If we upgrade to 394, do we still need to turn off print preview?

Thanks for your help!

Our problem was resolved after upgrading but because we do not use Terminal Services I cannot be sure that the same approach would resolve your issue.

We were instructed never to make the novaprinter the default in Globe.

The print preview setting was recommended to us by Exact. We implemented at the time but it has crept back into usage without a reoccurrance of the issue.

Sorry that I cannot be more definitive but I am not an authority on the topic. This is merely something that we lived through and so I can only speak from our experience.

Best of luck!
